Hot Songs

Jay Rock – Dollars Make Sense

Jay Rock is too talented to go unnoticed on the West Coast rap scene.  This Warner Bros. artist has been patiently waiting to release his major label debut but, in the meantime, has released hit records such as “All My Life,” “Follow Me Home,” and has been building his buzz by touring with The Game.

With his latest hit single, “Dollars Make Sense,” Jay Rock goes in over a chilling West Coast gangsta rap beat, making sure that this song is not easily forgotten by the listener.  Glasses Malone’s hook also gets stuck in your head.

The verses on this song are pretty serious as Jay Rock spits:

“You niggas better recognize,
I can hop out and spray like insecticide,
A hundred rounds will have your whole hood petrified,
Pull up, push on niggas for the exercise.”

Lines like that show that Jay Rock is still very much South Central, despite the major label deal.  Glasses also comes hard on his verse, but doesn’t manage to steal the show from Jay Rock.

Drake feat. Nipsey Hussle – Killer

Two of the game’s hottest young emcees, Drake and Nipsey Hussle, jump on “Killer,” turning this track into a hit record.

The first verse shows us why Drake has so much buzz, displaying the artist’s wordplay as he spits about his successful hip hop career.  However, the best verse goes to Nipsey who spits:

“Before rap my last name was my lifestyle,
And when I visualize success it look like right now,
What was once great skies is now white clouds,
And I did it with the ones y’all said was not the right crowd.”

Those are some powerful words from the West Coast emcee, who shows us that he’s been doing what he had to do, in order to make a name for himself.  Nipsey is now enjoying the success he worked so hard to obtain, because against all odds he has made it.

Jay-z feat. Drake – We Off That

With a little less than 2 weeks before Jay-z drops The Blueprint 3, the first few singles and leaked tracks have created a lot of buzz.  One of the most recent leaks is “Off That,” where Jay-z teams up with Drake to speak to us about their “future swag,” not to be confused with Yung La’s futuristic swag.  Jay-z tells us that whatever it is we like, he has already grown tired of it.

Timbaland did a great job producing the fast paced dance beat, which stirs up a vision of Jay-z running around hip hop, figuring out what’s hot so he can go on to something else… continuing to stunt on us!

The song’s whole feel is summed up by Jay’s verses:

“The only time I deal in past tense,
Is I’m past rims and I’m past tints,
If you driving it, I drove it,
You got it, cause I sold it,
You cop’d that, I brought it back.”

So basically if you like something, Jay-z probably used to like it.  Another notable part of this record is where Jay-z takes shots at Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh.

“This aint black vs white my nigga we off that,
Please tell Bill O’Reilly to fall back,
tell Rush Limbaugh to get off my balls,
This 2010 not 1864.”

Rush Limbaugh responded by saying “I did not know I was on anybody’s balls and Bill O’Reilly responded with, “A regular Otis Redding, isn’t he?

Wiz Khalifa – Favorite Show

Wiz Khalifa’s latest single, “Favorite Show,” is a good introduction into his personality, which we touched on in our recent interview.

Both Wiz and Boogz Boogetz have laid back verses about chillin in this song, with neither of them dropping extraordinarily quotable lines.  The hook, however, does a great job of summing up this track’s purpose and feel:

“Niggas so hateful,
We gettin paper though,
Now the bitches watch me like I’m they favorite show,
We started without a care, thats the way we know,
Now they running screaming my name everywhere we go,
Champagne parties smoking at your crib, your crib,
We just cold kick it, listen to dope shit, dope shit
We spend it without a care that’s the way we know,
Now they running screaming my name everywhere we go.”

This is a song to play when you’re driving in your car, when your relaxing at your house, or chillin on the subway.

Nipsey Hussle

Ermias Ashgedom

Label: All Money In, Cinematic Music Group, Epic

Hometown: Crenshaw & Slauson, CA

Nipsey’s music is often a reflection of his surrounding environment, as he gives us a view into the harsh realities of the LA street life. Before his hip hop career, Nipsey was involved with South Central's Rolling Sixties Crips, and even owned his own clothing store.

Nipsey Hussle's motto of “All Money In, No Money Out,” stresses the labor, regardless of the fruits of one’s labor. This hustle mentality coupled with an impressive amount of co-signs and comparisons to fellow L.A. emcee Snoop Dogg, has brought Nipsey's music to the public eye.

Wiz Khalifa

Cameron Thomaz

Label: Rostrum Records

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

Despite having a smash single in "Say Yeah," Wiz Khalifa spent 2 years sitting on the shelf at Warner Bros. Records. However, after leaving his major label situation during the summer of 2009, the XXL Freshman’s career really started to take off.

Due to an impressive amount of grass roots marketing, orchestrated by his current management team at Rostrum Records, Wiz's most recent project, Kush and Orange Juice, became a trending topic on Twitter and the talk of major music publications upon its release. Wiz Khalifa's once hard-to-pronounce name is now becoming more common place in hip hop discussions.
