Stop Sleepin: Rich Kids

By Mike Boyd - Artist Profiles

The hottest group in high school is getting the whole country to sing along with their Crunk anthems, and now with a major label backing, it is only a matter of time before the Rich Kids bring their swavor to your stereo.

This group of five knows how to turn their everyday lives into fun, fast paced melodies that have club DJ’s knowing their name.

However, The Rich Kids are not alone in creating this high school swavor sound.  Another group from the ATL who has a similar sound and fan base is the unsigned Travis Porter.  That is not to say that these two groups can’t peacefully co-exist and be mutually beneficial to each other’s success, but I wanted to point out the strange fact that every time there is a new movement in Atlanta, at least one or two artists/groups pop up with a similar sound.

We witnessed this phenomenon with D4L and Dem Franchize Boyz popping up around the snap movement, Young Jeezy, Shawty Lo, and Rocko popping up around the trap movement, Yung La and J Futuristic popping up around the futuristic Jetson swag movement,  and now we are seeing the Rich Kids and Travis Porter pop up surrounding the most recent high school swavor movement.

Highlighting the Rich Kid’s swavor is their melodic hit “Wassup.”

The track’s smooth feel is addicting, and helps the group portray themselves as living a young baller’s dream.  I can clearly see the Rich Kids running through Lenox Mall buying up the stores and poppin tags as their song suggests!  (This is quite a hilarious vision with the group throwing tags at the ceiling and all.)

The group’s club banger is “My Patna Dem” featuring Young Dro.

This song has a lot of raw crunk energy, to the point that the hook is made up of Neighborhood shout outs!  Now for those of you who do not know what “My Patna Dem” means, pay attention to the song’s context clues.  “My Patna Dem” is the equivalent of saying ” I fucks with them.” For example, when Rich Kids say that a certain area of Atlanta or clothing line is their “Patna Dem,” they are saying that they like that clothing line or hang out with people from that neighborhood.

Another track from Rich Kids that is getting a lot of attention is “Bank Roll Walk.”

This dance song has the group talking about how much money they have and how thick the bands are in their jeans.  If you want to quickly grasp the whole song’s feel, simply listen to the beginning of the hook:

“I got so much cash, I do that big old bank roll walk,
I don’t even speak I let that big old bank roll talk.”

By now you can probably tell that the Rich Kids are not trying to change your life with deep lyrics, but they are doing a great job of changing your day with fun, up-beat music!  These kids are successful artists, because they are selling their personality and carefree lifestyle in their records.

Recently, the group teamed up with Grand Hustle and DJ Infamous to release Money Swag, a mixtape full of songs that will get stuck in your head, such as Shine, Swag Attack, Swaggn By Myself, G d Up, Money Swag, and Swag worth a million.

Look out for the Rich Kids upcoming major label release under Grand Hustle!
