Mixtape Review: Jay Rock – 30 Day Takeover

Artist Profiles

Watts rapper, Jay Rock, recently embarked on a 30 day campaign, between August 6th and September 4th, where he dropped a new song everyday, as well as a handful of videos.

As you might expect, from any artist who releases a song a day for 30 days straight, some of the tracks are significantly better than others.

That being said, Jay Rock does a great job in mixing original material with freestyles over famous beats, to create a solid mixtape in 30 Day Takeover.

The standout track from the mixtape, “Dollars Make Sense,” features Jay Rock and Glasses Malone going in over a chilling West Coast gangsta rap beat.

That’s one of the best West Coast rap songs I’ve heard in a minute.  Jay Rock gets pretty serious as he spits:

“You niggas better recognize,
I can hop out and spray like insecticide,
A hundred rounds will have your whole hood petrified,
Pull up, push on niggas for the exercise.”

Lines like that show Jay Rock is still very much South Central, despite the major label deal.

Another dark beat that gets murked by Jay Rock is “12 o’clock.”

This whole song is full of hard lyrics, where Jay Rock speaks out against the police and touches on street life.

A song which is equally as hard as “12 o’clock” is “No Mask On.”

The video and beat for “No Mask On” are ridiculous!

Just so you know, not all of the mixtapes tracks are street bangers.  We see Jay Rock get serious on “Never Coming Home,”  where he raps about committing murder and spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Jay Rock vividly describes the thoughts of a man behind bars with his lyrics:

“Only the strong survive, behind these walls,
I aint never coming home, but that aint what hurt the most,
My niggas I thought was down, they don’t write no more,
I thought, what would my bitches would do without me,
Shit, all of them bitches forgot about me…
Mentally I got my life took.”

Listening to “Never Coming Home” will make you miss your loved ones in jail.

Other notable tracks are Plenty Money, Birthday Sex, How You Do That There, Full Time Gangsta, and Street Life.

30 Day Takeover does a great job of holding us over until Jay Rock’s major label debut, Follow Me Home, is released under Warner Bros.
