Mixtape Review: OJ Da Juiceman – Alaska in Atlanta
OJ Da Juiceman, born Otis Williams Jr, originally made a name for himself in the mixtape circuits, and even won the SEA award for Mixtape Artist of the Year. Shortly thereafter he signed with Asylum Records.
Da Juiceman is back with his latest mixtape, Alaska in Atlanta, which ranks next to Culinary Art School as one of OJ’s best mixtapes to date.
Alaska in Atlanta is hosted by The Aphilliates’ DJ Holiday, and serves as yet another reminder of how well OJ fits into the mixtape game.
The opening skit immediately sets the tone for this chilled swag mixtape, with its hilarious Discovery Channel feel! “Burr Beer,” which follows the skit, serves as the opening scene to this “movie” directed by DJ Holiday and staring Juiceman .
OJ gave this mixtape the cohesive feel of an album by inserting BURR ad libs, as well as verses about cold weather, ice, igloos, Eskimos, and polar bears in nearly every song. Even the interludes are entertaining, as we hear OJ speak on his music and how iced out he is, BURR!
The first video shot off the mixtape is “Early Morning Trapping.”
The intro to this video is hilarious, as Juiceman shows us some of his signature style phrases. Plenty more of these catchphrases come out in “Early Morning Trapping.”
“Coca-Cola shawty,
cooking on a foreman,
pull up in my trap,
whip same color an armpit,
Walkin wit a guala, half a million on my own bitch.”
Few people are as creative or ridiculous as OJ Da Juiceman.
A street banger and arguably the best song off the mixtape is “Vegetarian.”
The hook on “Vegetarian” is ridiculous by itself, and the verses are some of OJ’s best efforts on the mixtape.
Here’s the infectious hook:
“Damn baby girl, you lookin at a champion,
Three diamond chains on, and all of ‘em lesbian,
Down for that beef, but my pocket vegetarian, (green)
Fresh everyday like a baby in a carriage,
Girl look at my brighton watch,
Girl look at my brighton watch,
Three chains, sick ring, look at all the ice I got.”
Screwing down half of the hook makes the whole song fire!
Alaska in Atlanta has few guest appearances, most of whom are relatively unknown artists with styles similar to OJ. The biggest feature comes from Bobby Valentino on “In The Club.”
Other standout tracks on the mixtape are Tug Boat, Haters, Tonka, Midget, and Juiceman.
OJ Da Juiceman makes music for the trap, as well as everyone looking to hear fun music about ridiculous topics. It will be exciting to see what happens when The Otis Williams Jr. Story drops. This album will be OJ’s sophomore release, and it’s going to be a major turning point in the artist’s career.
Once The Otis Williams Jr. Story hits the shelves, we will see if the trap star, who exploded onto the hip hop scene with the help of Gucci Mane, can become a major mainstream rap star in his own right.
