Hot Songs: 11/23

The Clipse – Popular Demand

The Clipse have released a handful of videos for their upcoming album, Til the Casket Drops, but none have been more controversial than “Popular Demand.”  The video, directed by Rik Cordero, starts off outside the infamous Obama Fried Chicken restaurant in Brooklyn, and also features Cam’ron spitting his whole verse inside a Popeyes.

Most of the video’s controversy comes from MTV blocking out the “Obama Fried Chicken” sign.  Here’s MTV’s version.

I like how the Popeyes employees went about their business as if Killa Cam wasn’t rapping in front of the register.

I’m not sure if he’s really talking about Lebron James, but Pusha T spits:

“Used to have this white bitch, she looked like Madonna though,
Heard that she fuckin Lebron, but shit I don’t know,
Like that Bron Bron?  I had that long time ago,
Buck naked on the balcony at the Daleno.”

Another quotable phrase from “Popular Demand” is “Outside of Popeyes eating chicken and fries.”  I’ve seen a number of tweets carrying that!

Slaughter House – Microphone

“Microphone” is the latest video dropped by Slaughter House, and like always, the guys put forth great verses.

Here are my favorite lines from each emcee on the track:

Royce Da 5′9” – “I’m the blueprint / I’ll have your clothes lookin like they was designed by bullet holes and shoe prints.”

Crooked I – “Turn it down if you weak on that microphone / Lame niggas shouldn’t speak on that microphone.”

Joell Ortiz – “I’m educated but I’m dumb on that microphone / Don’t even bother, you’ll get done on that microphone / I’ll turn a father into a son on that microphone.”

Joe Budden – “Fuck record sales / It’s who the machine markets best.”

It’s crazy how despite being great lyricists individually, it took forming a group to bring all their careers to the next level.  I also like how Slaughter House fits all four emcees on the track in under five minutes.

Fabolous – Imma Do It

“Imma Do It” is the latest video from Fabolous’ fifth studio album, Loso’s Way.

The video itself is pretty basic, as it mostly shows Fabolous and Kobe in the streets of New York.  However, the hook is a great contrast to Fabolous’ quick choppy delivery, and will definitely get the song stuck in your head.

Kobe’s hook:

“The block got my back, and my boys do too,
And my baby momma trippin, said she need more loot,
Every block, every hood, every ghetto got beef,
Got a heater on my lap and another in the back,
Shit how am I supposed to cope with all this stress on me,
Everybody and they momma callin feds on me,
I don’t know what I’m a do but I’m a Do It (I’m a Do It),
Look I don’t know what I’m a do but I’m a Do It
(I’m a Do It),
I got money on my head, but I’m riding in the drop.”

Fabolous created yet another hit record.

Despite having a smash single in "Say Yeah," Wiz Khalifa spent 2 years sitting on the shelf at Warner Bros. Records. However, after leaving his major label situation during the summer of 2009, the XXL Freshman’s career really started to take off.

Due to an impressive amount of grass roots marketing, orchestrated by his current management team at Rostrum Records, Wiz's most recent project, Kush and Orange Juice, became a trending topic on Twitter and the talk of major music publications upon its release. Wiz Khalifa's once hard-to-pronounce name is now becoming more common place in hip hop discussions.

On July 30th, Wiz announced that he signed a record deal with Atlantic Records.
