Mixtape Review: Travis Porter & Waka Flocka Flame – Streets R Us

By Mike Boyd - Mixtape Review

On Saturday, Travis Porter and Waka Flocka Flame dropped the much anticipated Streets R Us mixtape, hosted by DJ Teknikz.

Except for a few tracks taken from the Lebron Flocka James mixtape, Streets R Us is full of new material.  That being said, I would have liked to have heard more from Waka Flocka.

“Hell U Talmbout” embodies what the mixtape artwork promises, as Travis Porter’s sound matches up perfectly with Frenchie and Waka’s So Icey Ent style.

Check out the in-studio video for “Hell U Talmbout.”

It looks like they had a lot of fun creating the fast paced, high energy track, which will hopefully set clubs on fire like “Turnt Up” and “Let’s Do It.”

The song’s hook is contagious, as the group repeats “Hell U Talmbout” every other line:

“Hit the club, jump the whole line,
Hell U Talmbout,
Fuck a quarter man, we get the whole pound,
Hell U Talmbout,
Say that I aint got it on me right now?
Hell U Talmbout,
Fuck around the whole hood hold me down,
Hell U Talmbout.”

On “Waffle House,” the only other track featuring both Travis Porter and Waka, we are brought along as they order sausage biscuits.

Another high energy track with a sick hook is “Bananas.”

You can’t tell me people won’t be screaming “I’m so turnt up right now, I’m stuck and I can’t turn down,” when “Bananas” goes on in the club!

In addition to the high energy tracks, Travis Porter is quickly learning how to make radio and club hits with their playfully sung hooks.  A perfect example of this method is seen in “Go Shorty Go.”

Travis Porter dedicates this smooth track to the grown women in the club, singing:

“I was walkin through the crowd and I seen her with her team,
I tapped her on the shoulder and said girl I like them jeans,
I told her, go shorty shorty go, shorty shorty go, gooooo,
Go shorty shorty go, shorty shorty go,
She was dancing like a stripper, so I had to throw some ones,
She wink’d her eye at me, and said it’s time to have some fun,
I told her, go shorty shorty go, shorty shorty go, gooooo,
Go shorty shorty go, shorty shorty go.”

“Go Shorty Go” will stay in my Zune play list for a minute.

The group gives us another surprisingly entertaining in-studio video for “Uh Huh Part 2.”  I’m beginning to think that more groups should consider taping their studio sessions for music videos and scrap the story boards!

Not only was the video entertaining but it gave us a great glimpse into Travis Porter’s carefree personality.

“Uh Huh Part 2″ had me hooked from the beginning with:

“If you know you do it big, and you a bad bitch,
Clap your hands, clap your hands,
If your girlfriend thick, but you know you the shit,
Clap your hands, baby clap your hands.”
Everybody stop and stare when she walks in the room,
I said girl you the bomb, she tick ticked and went boom.”

Those are some funny lines.

DJ Teknikz put “Turnt Up” and “Let’s Do It” at the end of the mixtape as bonus tracks to make sure new fans are caught up!  Other standout tracks on the mixtape are “Have Her Singing Like,” and “I Just Wanna F K.”

The group’s upcoming I’m A Differenter 3 mixtape will be a major turning point in their unsigned hip hop career, as they’ll undoubtedly release more quality music!

Travis Porter, made up of Quez, Strap, and Ali, announced their record deal with Jive on November 29th. Prior to their major deal, the group had made themselves the hottest independent rap group in the country with over forty five million Youtube views, multiple singles reaching the Billboard charts, concerts overseas, and music videos in rotation on MTV Jams.

It'll be interesting to see what the boys do while under the major label umbrella, as they've already accomplished more than a number of artists who are signed!

Waka Flocka Flame was born in Jamaica, Queens, to Debra Antney, Gucci Mane and Nicki Minaj’s ex-manager, but relocated to Riverdale, Georgia when he was 9 years old. Growing up, the rapper was given the nickname “Waka” by his cousin who thought that he sounded like Fozzie Bear from The Muppet Babies TV show. Years later, Waka’s mentor and CEO, Gucci Mane, evolved the nickname into Waka Flocka Flame.
