EP Review: The Cool Kids – Merry Christmas
Coming as somewhat of a surprise, The Cool Kids and Don Cannon teamed up to release a four track EP last week on Christmas day.
Despite a number of artists falling short of their goal to give fans an extra present on December 25th, The Cool Kids delivered their Merry Christmas EP.
I say the effort was done in a surprising manner because the first time we heard of the Merry Christmas EP, it was from a video teaser released on December 24th via Decatur Dan.
Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks recorded the EP’s four tracks in just four days, aiming to hold over fans who eagerly await the group’s debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles.
Yesterday, Decatur Dan released a music video for “Tires,” which was filmed in the studio, along with some behind-the-scenes commentary thrown in the mix.
The Cool Kids – “Tires.”
It’s always cool to get an insider’s view on the production process.
Fitting in perfectly with The Cool Kid’s sound, Boldy James starts off the track describing his whip:
“Twenty inch gold D’s Yokohama skinnies,
Gold dollars lookin like four giant pennies,
Sittin up high on them Jerry Springers,
Heavy duty sprees and shocks I’m in the bleachers,
Comin out the mall, you can see me creepin,
When I’m comin down you can hear the speakers,
Looking good standin tall you can feel me beatin,
Down your block knockin pictures off the wall leanin.”
I love how he worked in a reference to one of my favorite songs, “Knocking Pictures Off The Wall.” “Tires” is the last track on the EP, and also the only song with any references to Christmas.
Chuck speaks about the holiday season with:
“It was a week before Christmas and all through the house,
On the couch blowing Christmas tree clouds,
In the house, like we passin out presents,
You know what I’m saying, ya’ll know what I’m getting,
But I’d rather give it than get it,
If you playin this record get that sonna bitch clickin,
Like reindeer steps, Dasher, Vixen, and Blitzen.”
I was hoping there would be some Christmas wordplay worked into their rhymes, and The Cool Kids did not disappoint!
The Cool Kids – “Free Throws.”
“Free Throws” is my favorite track off the EP, partially because of how well the NBA sound clips fit with the song. This track reminds me a lot of the group’s last project with Don Cannon, Gone Fishing. That mixtape was sick!
Going strong with the basketball theme, Chuck spits:
“Light weight I’m the man, so pass the ball,
Then invite two friends, tell ‘em call two more,
Then its come over time, and I’m tryin to score,
Like the last minute tip before the horn go off, errrr.”
If you haven’t downloaded the EP yet, the whole project can be found on DJDonCannon.com.

Big shout out to Decatur Dan, Don Cannon, Chris Watkins, Josh Ellington, Craig Sprecher, and everyone involved in making this EP.
