Stop Sleepin: Shaun Boothe

By Mike Boyd - Artist Profiles, Artists

Based in Toronto Shaun Boothe has been making moves in the hip hop game for a minute.  He originally went by the name Ricochet, followed by  Seazon, until finally sticking with the name his mother gave him.

Sean’s first hit came from the self produced track, “One By One,” featuring Natasha Waterman.

Most recently, he’s been able to create international buzz with his impressive Unauthorized Biography Series, which was inspired by Nas’ work of the same name.

Shaun is using this series to vividly portray the lives of twelve icons.  So far we’ve seen him tell the story of James Brown, Bob Marley, Muhammad AliMLK & Barack Obama, Jimi Hendrix, and most recently, Sean Combs (see below).

Since being released on December 1st, the “Unauthorized Biography of Sean Combs” has caused quite a commotion on hip hop blogs and Twitter.

Recently, Swizz Beats tweeted out the 2nd episode of the series, and Diddy showed his support via a retweet of his own biography.

Shaun Boothe – “Unauthorized Biography of Sean Combs.”

That video is almost as impressive as the amazing narrative put forth by Shaun, as he takes us through Diddy’s life in only 5 minutes and 35 seconds.

Here’s a quick excerpt from the track:

“1969, November 4th,
Harlem, New York,
There was a new born,
First name Sean, last name Combs,
Two years old, his father was shot in the dome,
Momma all alone,
She loved her husband, but she wouldn’t raise a clone,
So she worked hard, three jobs on her own,
Bought herself a home, away from the street life,
Gave her little boy, Sean’s future a re-write,
Something he’d appreciate when he was grown,
Yea, see he was one of the lucky ones,
But as a kid he’d always puff out his chest when he was angry,
That’s where he got the name Puffy from.”

It’s impressive to see someone spit an accurate life story while maintaining a smooth flow.  Download the whole track here via 2DopeBoyz.

These videos are continuously gaining credibility, as Shaun has even been contacted by schools who were looking to show his work to students.  It seems like the only person Shaun is waiting to hear feedback from is Nas, who I’m sure would co-sign the work.

Earlier this year, Shaun Boothe dropped a video for the first single off his upcoming Hip-Hop in 3D project, “Music Man,” featuring Amanda Diva.

“Music Man” shows Amanda and Shaun’s funny take on music industry relationships.  It looks like they had a great time on the set for that video!

Hip Hop in 3D will be Shaun’s first full length project, and with it, he aims to touch on a wide range of topics, hence the title.

Shaun Boothe – “Poor Boy.”

That is one sick sample of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Shaun talks about coming up in the rap game with:

“Now I never got no handout,
Coming up, I had to be outstanding to stand out,
I aint made it yet, but I know what I’m doing,
I swear to you, soon as I get my foot in, I’m a shoe-in…
Glasses up, let me make a toast, this for anyone that got it rough,
here’s to, here’s to grinding from the bottom up, bottom’s up,
Success is all timing,
I don’t mean luck, I mean that you got to put your time in.”

This track, which has been killin it up in Canada, is about to be released in the U.S. alongside a sick remix and impressive video which should be dropping any day now.  To give you a taste of the upcoming video, check out this trailer:

Be sure to keep an eye out for Hip Hop in 3D, as well as the next Unauthorized Biography Series video on Oprah, since both will be dropping early next year!

[...] Shaun Boothe’s “One Yes” is a creative remake of Nas’ original, where the Canadian emcee speaks about the time he’s put into the game and his hopes of getting that one chance to shine.  As always, Shaun impresses me with his lyrics, spitting lines such as, “We all want to be BIG, but are you Ready To Die?” [...]
