Yelawolf – “I Wish Remix” (Featuring Prynce Cy-Hi & Pill)
Yelawolf teamed up with Prynce Cy-Hi and Pill for the remix of “I Wish” off his critically acclaimed Trunk Muzik mixtape. The original version, with a guess verse from Raekwon, stood out as one of the more powerful tracks from the Alabama emcee’s latest project.
This version’s best verse comes from Pink City’s Pill:
“Oh Contrare mon frair,
One pure pain giver,
Don’t injest this,
It might cause corrosion of the liver,
Toxic, drop kick opponents on arrival,
This ain’t hip hop, this the manual to survival,
Take notes fake folks, imitators and lovers,
All true to life g’s risen up from the gutter,
I’m on something different from the rest of you rappers,
And that’s real shit, Pill spits exactly what happened.”
Last time Pill was in New York, he was joking around and making everyone laugh, while speaking some French like at the beginning of his verse. All joking aside, Pill spits some serious lines on the track and calls out all the imitators jockin his style.
“I wish a motherfucker would. Tell me this ain’t straight drop, yams’ fresh out the pot.” – Pill
Freddie Gibbs & Mikkey Halsted – “On My Own”
I love how Freddie Gibbs took us to Gary, Indiana with the video for “On My Own.” He’s been dropping hit after hit, paying tribute to his place of birth, so I know his fans from outside the Midwest were curious to see what the G.I. Pride was all about.
However, my favorite lines off the track come from Mikkey Halsted, who also shows us his home town in the video. Mikkey spits:
“Started on 72nd and Vincennes,
Where momma used a dresser drawer for my baby crib,
Guess that’s exhibit A of get it how you live.
You know poverty breeds the most creative shit…
Take your own path,
Fuck if people don’t feel ya,
The only man you answer to is the nigga in the mirror.
I’m on my own.”
Poverty has definitely bred some of the world’s most creative people. Don’t sleep on Mikkey Halsted, he’s making a lot of noise.
Twista – “Fire” (Featuring Lil Boosie)
The video put together by Ike Films is really dope, and the hook off “Fire” has been stuck in my head all morning:
“Smokin on that fire, (smokin on that fire),
Puffin on that dro, (puffin on that dro),
Kush weed gets me higher, (kush weed gets me higher),
And the diesel get me blowed, (and the diesel get me blowed)”
Aside from the hook, Lil Boosie spits my favorite part of the song with:
“I smoke that biscuit,
Smell good, let me hit that,
That’s why Michael Phelps did that.”
Michael Phelps jokes are hilarious!
“Fire” is featured on Twista’s Category F5 album, out now.

Freddie Gibbs
Label: Unsigned
Hometown: Gary, IN
After being kicked out of college and discharged from the military, Freddie Gibbs found his home in gangsta rap. The Gary, Indiana native uses his lyrics to vividly portray stories of his home town's crime infested streets. This talent was quickly noticed by Interscope, who signed Gibbs to a record deal within his first year of rapping. Despite showing him early love, Interscope kept Freddie Gibbs' music shelved for years.
Now that Freddie Gibbs has been released from that contract, he's already dropped two of 2009's best mixtapes in The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuisk and is prepping for 2010's Str8 Killa, No Filla release. It's only a matter of time before the labels come knocking on Gibbs' door.
Pill
Tyrone Rivers
Label: Asylum Records
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
Pill’s music is refreshing, as he paints a portrait of the streets in a very natural and real way, effectively shaming all the artists who pretend to be from his part of town. The XXL Magazine Freshman turned heads with his debut video for "Trap Goin' Ham," directed by Motion Family, as it graphically portrayed the poverty taking place in Pink City, five minutes away from a police precinct and seven minutes away from the state capital.
So far all of Pill's releases have been named after the various locations in which he grew up. 4180: The Prescription refers back to the Kimberly Court Projects on 4180 Cant Street and 4075: The Refill refers to the address of Pill’s aunt’s house. His next release, hosted by DJ Drama, should be a major turning point in his career as he's sure to be exposed to a wide fan base. Gangsta Grillz 1140: The Overdose is set to drop on June 1st.
Yelawolf
Michael Wayne Atha
Label: Ghet-O-Vision Ent., Interscope Records
Hometown: Gadsden, AL
Yelawolf's Trunk Muzik mixtape, hosted by DJ Burn One, catapulted the Alabama emcee into the emerging artist spotlight in early 2010. This project's buzz coupled with numerous co-signs (including Eminem) helped to land Yela a record deal at Interscope.
Described by Mike Bigga as a mix between Outkast and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yelawolf’s style is thoroughly southern. The southern drawl adds to Yela's unique sound which often meshes hip hop with classic rock. Other unique aspects of Yelawolf's persona are his love of skateboarding and appreciation for classic rock, which help him stand out amidst a sea of emerging hip hop artists.
