Hot Songs – 1/4/10

Maino – “Get ‘Em Tiger”

I love the concept behind Maino’s latest hit, “Get ‘Em Tiger,” where the Brooklyn emcee uses Tiger Woods’ name as a metaphor for cheating men.  In addition to the great concept, hilarious lyrics, and catchy hook, we’re also given an extremely radio-friendly beat, courtesy of The Colleagues.

I know that the track is meant to be about Maino’s personal conflict with being faithful, but I would love to see Tiger Wood’s reaction after hearing verses like this:

“I’m Tiger Woods, Yep I’m Tiger Woods,
And I’m truly sorry, I know that I’m no good,
I would keep it real, be faithful if I could,
But I’m Tiger Woods, yep I’m Tiger Woods,
I got women in the burbs, women out the country,
Women that I hurt, I’m sorry I know you love me,
I can feel your pain, please accept my apology,
The ones that ever been pregnant by me,
Nah baby not me, not the one you settle down with,
I’m the type to call up your friend and mess around with,
This is who I am, this is how I love,
Still trying to find a place to swing my golf club.”

I don’t think Tiger would be very amused!

It’s true, however, that Maino’s focus for the track was to show why most men can be compared to Tiger Woods.  Here’s the audio of Maino explaining the song’s meaning to Angela Yee.

Alley Boy – You Don’t Know

Alley Boy has been feeding the streets for a minute now, with track after track.  In his most recent release, “You Don’t Know,” the Atlanta rapper tells us his story, and gives a play-by-play of the last couple years with:

“In ‘05 I came home from a bid,
Back when me and Big Bank, we got caught with the mid,
Causing scenes in the trap spot, shooters on deck,
My young niggas hold a rifle to your neck.
We started Duck Tape when I was in prison,
Then I said when I get out that I was gonna kill it,
And I did it.
‘07 we met Ricky, West side to the tape,
But we was already eating,
But now we got a bigger plate.
I caught a charge in ‘08, got out in ‘09,
I wasn’t out a whole month and got signed.
I gotta be blessed, look at my niggas and the fam I got,
Look at the VVS stones in my watch,
Ain’t no cracks in this shit that I’m telling you,
This not a movie, not a play…
You are in a whole ‘nother league, a whole different category,
This is Alley Boy Da Don, the true story.”

Lyrics that give us the background on emerging artists are always welcome.  Big shout out to The Colleagues for giving us another sick beat!

I can’t wait to hear more, and according to BuckHeadDon’s TwitVid of Alley Boy in the studio last night, with Young Dro, Yung LA, and Waka Flocka, it looks like things are about to pick up in a major way for the artist.  That “Tall” track, playing in the background of the TwitVid, is going to be sick!

It looks like The Aphilliates are starting to work with Alley Boy, and while I was writing this article a video of his recent appearance on DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz radio show in Atlanta hit Youtube.com.

Diamond – SuperBad (Featuring Cee-Lo)

The last time we heard from Diamond, she was shaking her skittles with Crime Mobb.  Now the Dime Diva’s pursuing a solo career with her upcoming debut, The Black Barbie, set to be released in 2010.  I’m looking forward to hearing what the Harajuku Barbie has to say about that title.

In case you were wondering, Diamond has stated that she left the group on good terms and just feels that now is the right time to pursue her solo career.  I think she’s right, as hip hop is slowly seeing more and more female emcees come back into the picture.  Personally, I’m excited to hear more music from my favorite member of Crime Mobb!

The brief Cee-Lo feature only comes in for a few phrases on the track’s hook, but complements the choruses’ slow and sexy feel. A lot of the track’s vibe comes from the slowed down, snap beat, which reminds me of a similar sound that the Ying Yang Twins created with “Wait,” and David Banner explored with “Play.”

Label: Duct Tape Entertainment, Atlantic Records

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Despite having been in jail for the first half of 2009, Alley Boy’s name remained relevant in the streets due to the support of his Duct Tape family and the success of Big Bank Black’s “Try It Out." Upon being released, the Edgewood, Atlanta native bounced back and signed a joint venture between Atlantic Records and DTE.

Alley Boy's co-signs range from DJ Drama, to Gucci Mane, to fellow emerging artist Pill, and the Atlanta tastemakers have already crowned Alley Boy's Duct Tape Entertainment the biggest street movement since BMF.
