Mixtape Review: Yo Gotti & Zed Zilla – Cocaine Muzik 4 (Hosted by DJ Drama)
Download: Cocaine Muzik 4
Last week, Yo Gotti teamed up with fellow Memphis native, Zed Zilla, to release Cocaine Muzik 4, hosted by DJ Drama.
The highly anticipated mixtape dropped at 5PM on January 12th, alongside Cam’ron’s Boss of All Bosses 2.
CM4 felt more like an album than your standard mixtape. Part of the project’s cohesiveness comes Zed Zilla’s style and flow, which worked well with Gotti on tracks such as “In The Club” and “Pull Over.”
Most of CM4’s tracks contained original production, but we did get two impressive freestyles over hits from the New Boyz and Dorrough with, “Ice Cream Paint Job Freestyle” and “You’re A Jerk Freestyle.”
The mixtape’s lead single, “Men Lie, Women Lie,” was released shortly after Jay-z’s acceptance speech at the American Music Awards back in November, where he was suspected to have taken a shot at 50 Cent. This controversy came after Jay referenced a line from “Reminder,” in what seemed to be a insult to 50’s low album sales.
Yo Gotti – “Men Lie, Women Lie” (Featuring Lil Wayne)
I kept the DJ Drama intro to this track, because it adds to the “quality street music” feel of the record. Even with the Lil Wayne verse, “Men Lie, Women Lie” doesn’t have many outstanding quotables. It is, however, extremely catchy as the chopped up hook will get stuck in your head.
My favorite track off the mixtape, “Touchdown,” has Yo Gotti going in over a chilling street beat.
Yo Gotti’s flow works wonderfully with the beat as he spits the first verse, setting the tone for “Touchdown.”
“The streets talking, Gotti been doin good,
Niggas wanna try em, couple niggas from the hood,
You know how that go,
niggas say he don’t fuck with em, (I don’t),
Truth be told when I was hustlin, I ain’t fuck with em, (Fuck em)
Same niggas still owe me on a pack, think a nigga forgot because I’m rappin,
When I get off the road, I shoot back to my town,
New whip, new watch, fuck with me it’s goin down.
Own family hate me, damn,
Niggas looking mad, damn,
Guess it’d be a little better if a nigga was doin bad,
My momma got a smile, my brother still wild,
I gotta get this money, I just had another child.
They say I’m getting fat, guess I’m eatin good,
Twenty racks in the motor, got my name under the hood,
Sometimes I think back, I could have went fed,
This the chance of a lifetime, I gotta think ahead.”
The lines about people in the hood hating on Gotti being the same people he didn’t fuck with before his success are great. Outside of his verses, Yo Gotti wrote a dope boy anthem with the hook:
“I got base in the trunk,
Pies on the inside,
Marshmallow paint, 49′ers on the inside,
Touchdown, a nigga going long,
Field goal, extra point, a nigga goin strong,
210 on the dash, blue jean inside,
White with blue top,
Like the Yankees, when I come past,
Home run, that boy out the park,
Bases loaded, World Series,
That boy hustle smart.”
I like how he worked sports references into his wordplay.
Another standout track from Cocaine Muzik 4 is the, Eazy-E influenced, “Round The Way.”
Using the same concept as Slim Thug’s “Thug From Around The Way,” Gotti put his own spin on Eazy-E’s “Eazy Does It.” Yo Gotti fans will definitely appreciate this track.
My favorite quotes off CM4 come on “In The Club,” where Zed Zilla spits, “If I make you wifey, you’ll feel like Michele Obama feel,” and Yo Gotti references Twitter with “I’m in VIP chillin, couple bitches and my niggas/ Girl Yo Gotti in the club, That what I just read on Twitter,” ha!
Other tracks from the mixtape that you should check out are: “Pull Over,” “M-Town,” and “Quit Callin My Phone.” Listen to the whole project here:
