Bringing You Up To Speed: OJ Da Juiceman

By Mike Boyd - Artist Profiles, Artists

The last time OJ Da Juiceman’s name was featured in the press and blogs, it was concerning the extremely over-hyped incident of getting booed off stage.

I happened to be in attendance that evening as OJ caught the worst of a bad situation.  It’s true that the end of his set was met with boos, but the real mistake of the night was booking OJ to perform directly before Raekwon, Jadakiss, and Styles P.

I overheard hardcore Raekwon and D-Block fans complaining about the show’s line up, while waiting in line to enter the sold out venue.  These fans’ tempers only got worse as the show dragged on, with a large number of performances before the main acts.  The concert carried on so long, that when I left (early) it was already 3:00AM!

It’s important to note that the crowd was chanting Wu-Tang before OJ Da Juiceman even got on stage, and continued chanting it after he left.  DJ Green Lantern and Miss Info were both offended by the crowd’s hostility, and Green even said “Fuck That” a few times over the mic.

In case you haven’t seen the infamous performance, here’s some footage of “Make The Trap Say Aye.”

Overall, OJ had a great 2009 aside from that horrible press night in New York.  He was able to move an impressive number of units on his debut album while still keeping the streets happy with more mixtapes.  The last 2009 release from OJ was the DJ Holiday hosted, Alaska in Atlanta.  For more on the impressive tape, check out our review.

The artist’s latest mixtape, O.R.A.N.G.E., hosted by DJ Drama, dropped last week alongside B.o.B.’s May 25th project.  Unfortunately for OJ, B.o.B.’s project was so highly anticipated that O.R.A.N.G.E. was overlooked by many who were caught up in the May 25th hype.

“Touchdown,” produced by Drumma Boy, is a fan favorite off of O.R.A.N.G.E.

I find it interesting that the standout track from Yo Gotti’s, DJ Drama hosted, project, which dropped less than a month ago is also named “Touchdown,” and was produced by Drumma Drama – coincidence?

Juice uses the track to stunt on haters by describing his chains and riches, with an appropriate mix of football references thrown in:

“Sideline runnin, dodgin all these dummies,
Fly just like a plane, in my pocket extra luggage,
Madden 2010, and they sponsor my budget,
VVS diamonds, same color my sponsor,
The dirty bird falcons, same color my charger,
Onion green chain, like Miami Dolphins,
360 chain, and it be like a Falcon,
Blue and red and white, like Houston Texans.
Flexin on these 8’s, and I’m rocking Smith & Wesson,
Try to score a touchdown, bullshit is irrelevant,
Dumbo on my chain, and it be like an elephant,
60 yard pass, and I’m running like a Mexican.”

I like that line about being as fly as a plane with extra luggage in his pockets.  OJ always leaves us with quotables.

Another standout track from the project is “When I Get Big.”

Having little kids sing on your hook is a proven method for creating catchy southern tracks – OJ sticks to that formula.

Stream the whole project below, and be sure to check out the Juiceman’s hilarious British accent on “Not Tonite!”

Keep an eye out for OJ Da Juiceman’s upcoming album, The Otis Williams Jr. Story, AYE!
