Hot Songs – 3/29/10 (8Ball & MJG, Young Dro, Talib Kweli & Fashawn)

8Ball & MJG – “Bring It Back” (Featuring Young Dro)

“Bring It Back” is the first single off of 8Ball & MJG’s upcoming Ten Toes Down album, which sounds like it’s going to feature more of the hard southern sound they’re known for.  A number of DJs and southern artists such as DJ Grandmaster Flash, Bigga Rankin, Mike Bigga, Tony from The Core DJs, Young Buck, and Jazze Pha, paid their respects to the Memphis legends with cameos in the Gabriel Hart-directed video.

Nitti added the heavy hitting bass, and Young Dro laced the track with the type of swagged-out guest verse we’ve come to expect from the King of Polo.

Here’s a quick excerpt from Dro’s verse:

“My wrist weigh a pound, I got stoopid ass jewelry,
Spent a quarter million, yea the coop is that serious,
I hear a hater hating, I got superman ears,
Blue and red Lamborghini, superman gears,
Polo, polo, polo, I’ve been doing that for years,
Smell like money, you can touch it, don’t be scared.”

All of the verses have a lot of energy in them, but the hottest part of the song is the hook which plays off of Yung Ralph’s hit, “Look Like Money.”

“What it sound like? Sound like money,
What it look like? Look like money,
What it feel like? Feel like money,
What the real like? Making that money.
Tell the DJ bring it back, (Tell the DJ bring it back),
Tell the DJ bring it back,
(Tell the DJ bring it back),
Tell the DJ bring it back, (Tell the DJ bring it back),
Tell the DJ bring it back, (Tell the DJ bring it back).

Anyone who used to bump Yung Ralph, will definitely be feeling this track!

Ten Toes Down is set to drop on April 6th.

Fashawn – Life’s A Bitch (Featuring Talib Kweli)

Fashawn got help from Talib Kweli on this remake of “Life’s A Bitch” off of Nas’ Illmatic album.  In case you didn’t know, the Fresno emcee, who graced the cover of XXL magazine earlier this month, has re-made Nas’ classic album and will be releasing the project soon.

Here’s a quick excerpt from Fashawn’s version:

“I wake up early on my birthday, I’m 20, it’s a blessing,
Goodbye adolescent hood, hello new direction,
I’m in a new lane, from the streets I graduated,
To money and fame, cause my life is entertainment,
Kick rhymes about the slums, not a kid with a trust fund,
My mentality is get money in lump sums,
This is for my niggas that slang,
I know you got to maintain,
But rearrange, sanitize your brain,
Same brothers I was with, on the block getting blunted,
Who would have thought, they’d give em years by the hundreds.”

I like how Fashawn starts his verse with a clear reference to Nas’ original opening line.  Small details like that are going to make this project very interesting!

For more on Fashawn, check out our recent interview, where he talks about his Ode to Illmatic project and how he’d like to meet Nas.  Also, if you enjoyed Fashawn’s rendition of “Life’s A Bitch,” be sure to check out his version of “Memory Lane,” below.

Due to his classic hip hop style, flow, and lyrical content, Fashawn has received a number of comparisons to a young Nasir Jones. These comparisons became even more rampant after the Fresno California native released his debut album, Boy Meets World, which featured album artwork similar to Nas’ Illmatic.

The success of Boy Meets World helped Fashawn grace the cover of XXL Magazine this spring as one of 2010’s artists to watch. Most recently, he re-worked Nas’ classic Illmatic, giving it a West Coast feel in Ode To Illmatic.
