Interview: Big Sean (4/5/10)

By Mike Boyd - Interviews

Shout out to KamYeWest for the article’s photo!

After watching videos of Big Sean from Wednesday night, you’d never guess that he was second to take the stage out of the show’s seven performences (Jay Rock & Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, Pill, Donnis, Nipsey Hussle, and Cam’ron & Vado).  The packed crowd, rapping along with the G.O.O.D. Music artist’s mixtape tracks, went crazy every time he performed one of their favorites!

Sean took advantage of the receptive environment and premiered the brand new track, “Bullshitin’,” off of his upcoming Finally Famous album.  At his request, the crowd screamed “Bullshitin’” each time Big Sean chanted “Fuck you doin?”  This engagement was pretty impressive as New York crowds normally do the opposite of what you ask, ha!

HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Big Sean after the show, to speak about the new single “Bullshitin’,” making the viral “Lemonade Freestyle” video, who he’d want to jump into a cipher with, and the upcoming DJ Spinz-produced club banger.

A cipher with Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, and Chip Tha Ripper would be nuts.  As these three seem to be good friends and have a very complementary sound in their raps, it’d be a lot of fun to watch!

Also, it’ll be interesting to hear the street record that Sean cooked up with Rick Ross and Pusha T, “100 Keys.”  As stated in our interview, although most of his records wouldn’t be considered “street,” songs like “A Million Dollars” definitely connect with kids growing up in situations similar to those Big Sean faced in the hood of Detroit.

I like the video’s theme – everyone dreaming of a better life that they’ll soon be having.

Big shout out to Dante Digital and everyone at Capital Park studios who helped put this viral video together!

As mentioned in the interview, this freestyle over Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade” really took off.  Fans and critics alike have crowned Big Sean’s version the best remix to Gucci’s hit track.  Here’s Sean performing the seemingly never-ending song live in NYC.

There haven’t been many Detroit emcees to grace the cover of XXL Magazine, and as Big Sean mentioned in our interview, he “can count them all on one hand.”  Feeling a need to put on for his city, as well as the heightened expectations of being one of XXL’s ten emerging artists to watch this year, Sean is working hard to make his presence felt.

Having said that, after seeing what DJ Spinz created with Travis Porter and Roscoe Dash, you already know the next release from Big Sean is going to be a smash.  What raises the anticipation even higher for the club record, is hearing Sean say that the track will still very much fit his style while still maintaining the fun club feel that DJ Spinz is becoming known for.

In the mean time, keep an eye out for the video to “Bullshitin’,” which should be dropping very soon!
