Interview – Pill (4/1/10)

By Mike Boyd - Interviews

Shout out to KamYeWest for the article’s photo!

Last night’s XXL Magazine Freshman showcase featured performances from Cam’ron, Vado, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, Freddie Gibbs, Donnis, Nipsey Hussle, and Pink City’s Pill.  Needless to say, the venue was packed.

After joining his friend and fellow XXL Freshman, Freddie Gibbs, for a performance of the duo’s “Womb 2 The Tomb,” Pill took the stage and brought the crowd down to the A.

The Atlanta emcee made sure his energy was felt, yelling “Ok Dennn” in between songs and asking the crowd to get hyped.  At one point, he even shared a story of getting stuck next to a crying baby on his flight up to NYC, ha!

Performing a number of the standout tracks from 4075: The Refill, the crowd gave Pill the kind of response suitable for a budding hip hop star.  They rapped along with his mixtape tracks and yelled for a performance of the hit “Trap Goin Ham.”

After the show, Pill spoke to HipHopAtLunch.com about Alley Boy and the DTE family, working with DJ Drama, Kane Beatz, and FatBoi, as well as what to expect from the “Ok Dennn” video.

There have been a number of rappers and critics speaking out against the current XXL Freshmen list in interviews and Tweets.  These complaints are getting childish and I personally don’t pay any attention to them.  However, if you want to hear the Jae Millz interview that everyone’s talking about, you can check it out here.

I can’t wait to hear what Pill cooks up in the studio with super-producers like Kane Beatz and FatBoi.  Hopefully some of the tracks they’re working on get featured on the upcoming Gangsta Grillz 1140: The Overdose mixtape, hosted by DJ Drama.

If you still haven’t seen the behind the scenes footage of “OK Dennn,” spoken about in the interview, I suggest you check that out now.  The video should really take off, as the phrase has already started picking up steam.  Here’s Pill performing the next single last night:

Pill – “Okay Dennn”

Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming “We Outside” video, featuring fellow emerging Atlanta artist and Pill’s close friend, Alley Boy.

Here are some videos from Pill’s performance:

Pill – “Trap Goin Ham”

Freddie Gibbs – “Womb 2 The Tomb” (Featuring Pill)

Pill – “Run Up To Me” (Featuring Freddie Gibbs)

Pill – “Got Yourself A Gun”

Pill’s music is refreshing, as he paints a portrait of the streets in a very natural and real way, effectively shaming all the artists who pretend to be from his part of town. The XXL Magazine Freshman turned heads with his debut video for "Trap Goin' Ham," directed by Motion Family, as it graphically portrayed the poverty taking place in Pink City, five minutes away from a police precinct and seven minutes away from the state capital.

So far all of Pill's releases have been named after the various locations in which he grew up. 4180: The Prescription refers back to the Kimberly Court Projects on 4180 Cant Street and 4075: The Refill refers to the address of Pill’s aunt’s house. His next release, hosted by DJ Drama, should be a major turning point in his career as he's sure to be exposed to a wide fan base. Gangsta Grillz 1140: The Overdose is set to drop on June 1st.
