Mixtape Review: DJ Jayceeoh Presents – Avant-Gucci
DJ JayCeeOh is steadily building up his following with live shows that reach across the country and all the way to Europe. He’s also known to be called upon from time to time, by emerging hip hop artists, such as Wiz Khalifa and Donnis, to DJ their live shows.
The Brooklyn DJ’s latest project, Avant-Gucci, looks to broaden Gucci Mane’s fan base while giving fans of the southern emcee something to which they can vibe. True to it’s name, this collection of unusual match-ups is far from what Gucci’s fans would consider the “norm.”
This avant-garde theme is symbolized by the project’s cover art, inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Three Musicians. Gucci Mane was hilariously put in the famous painting by artist Rhek.
Instead of mashing together a list of Gucci’s latest hits, JayCeeOh decided to dig up a handful of the artist’s less heard a capellas. Let’s take a closer look at a few standout blends:
DJ JayCeeOh – Gucci Mane vs Major Lazer – Cash Flow
Hearing Gucci Mane mumble about “rocking like cut off stockings” in the “Gladiator Interlude” before the bass of “Cash Flow” kicks in, helps to set the theme for the whole tape. It’s JayCeeOh’s ability to match clashing sounds, such as Gucci’s street lyrics and the laid-back Reggae feel of “Cash Flow,” that holds Avant-Gucci together.
Here’s an excerpt from Gucci’s hilarious lyrics:
“And I ain’t trynna flatter you, but I think you’re the finest,
And damn you’re getting thick I hope you don’t go on a diet,
I just bought you some glasses cause tonight I will be blinding,
Watch, chain, ring, ear rings, and they shining,
Gucci Mane La Fleur baby, but you can call me icy,
So tell your man to hate on me, I don’t want him to like me.”
The line about Gucci hoping that his girl doesn’t go on a diet has me cracking up every time!
DJ JayCeeOh – Ching-Ching Champions (Gucci vs Cool Kids)
JayCeeOh continues the mix by matching up Gucci Mane’s “Ching Ching” with The Cool Kids hit, “Champions.” If you haven’t heard the original, “Champions” is one of the best tracks off the Midwest Duo’s Gone Fishin mixtape hosted by Don Cannon.
DJ JayCeeOh – “Da Shit” (Gucci vs Gorillaz/Certified)
“Da Shit” has JayCeeOh going in on Gucci Mane’s boastful track “I’m The Shit.” The song was also remixed by Diplo for a lead single off of his Free Gucci Mixtape. JayCeeOh’s version has two parts, however, which I combined into the above video.
