Interview: Laws – (11/24/10)

By Mike Boyd - Interviews

Screen shot 2010-11-24 at 11.02.59 AMFlorida emcee, Laws, created a great deal of buzz after dropping his 4:57 project earlier this year.

The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Don Cannon hosted mixtape even went on to receive enough love to warrant a reissue in the form of 5:01: Overtime.

During a recent trip to New York, HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Laws to speak on working with the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (RookColionejl, & Kenny Barto), how the “Hold You Down” Remix with Big K.R.I.T. and Emilio Rojas came about, and the inspiration behind his upcoming Yesterday’s Future project.

Here’s our previous meeting, where, as mentioned in the interview above, Laws had porcupine-esque hair, ha!  Also, if you want to listen to Laws’ favorite Paul McCartney track, here’s a link to “Calico Skies.”

Below are the tracks spoken about in our interview:

Laws – “Runaway”

Here’s Laws’ first verse:

“And now you’re standing there holding on our promise ring,
You’re crying but you’re feeling not a thing,
Cause it dawned on you like the new day,
That your man’s not a king,
He’s a parasite and your life is what he got up in,
And all you got is him but he got everybody,
You’re a working woman and he’s a busy body,
You had big dreams, but he had a little hobby,
And you had a feeling you could change him, it was silly probably,
And now here we are, dinner table flipped,
Cell phone opened, text message sits,
On the floor like the tell-tale heart,
She asked ‘do I want to read this?’
I’m like go ahead start,
Because I’m at the point of giving in,
So we can begin again,
Fresher than the prince in them Bel Air parts,
But I can tell by the look that I get from her eyes,
I took everything she had now she’s empty inside,
I try to reverse roles,
If it was me in her place, I’d be putting someone in hearse mode,”
Now I’m feeling like a stranger,
She looking at me like I raped her,
All of a sudden a memory of what I used to be to her drifts through the air like a vapor,
And it breaks her,
She ain’t got nowhere to go,
We don’t even know the neighbors,
So I tell her.”

Laws’ storytelling makes it seem like we’re in the middle of the dysfunctional relationship.

Laws grabbed some Jazz-influenced production from the Hyptonic Brass Ensemble and a hook from Dave Young on this smooth track about his come up.  Below is the the video to the Florida emcee’s latest single, “Hold You Down” remix.
