Kendrick Lamar – Interview (3/28/11) Speaks on Nate Dogg, his “Michael Jordan” video, the upcoming project with J.Cole & more
Kendrick Lamar’s buzz has been steadily increasing since the emerging Compton emcee released his self-titled EP at the end of 2009.
Kendrick has since collaborated with some of the game’s hottest emcees, dropped the impressive O(verly) D(edicated) project, and graced the cover of XXL Magazine’s 2011 Freshman Class issue.
HipHopAtLunch met up with Kendrick Lamar to speak about Nate Dogg’s influence on his music, how the “Michael Jordan” video came about, the inspiration behind Vanity Slave Part 1 & Part 2, and the status of his upcoming project with J.Cole.
Kendrick performs “Look Out For Detox” at the end of this interview. If everything goes as planned, we should be seeing the young artist featured on Dr. Dre’s Detox album later this year.
Another exciting collaboration on Kendrick Lamar’s horizon comes as a joint project with J.Cole. ”The Heart Part 1” hears Kendrick speak on his first meeting with the Fayetteville emcee.
Below are the other tracks spoken about in our interview.
Kendrick Lamar – “Michael Jordan”

It was interesting to hear Kendrick speak on how this video was a spur of the moment idea. Having said that, the visuals to “Michael Jordan” came out great!
“I’m two much for these niggas,
I’m three much for these hoes,
Wayne told me that, and that’s just how it goes,
Michael Jordan, bitch.”
Kendrick Lamar – “Vanity Slave Part 2″ (Featuring Gucci Mane)
Download – “Vanity Slave Part 2″
Kendrick Lamar grabs a few lines from Gucci Mane for the hook on “Vanity Slave Part 2.” Shout out to Sounwave on the production!
Here’s a quick excerpt from the first verse.
“I want em, can’t afford em,
So I tell the swap meet to clone em,
I guess I really am a vanity slave,
I guess my ancestors turnin in their graves,
Burnin money when I get it,
Fuck a life savings,
Over draft bank statements,
Just to make a statement.”
If you enjoyed “Vanity Slave Part 2,” be sure to check out Part 1 where Kendrick further raps about what he explained in our interview.
