Interview: Dom Kennedy (7/7/11) Speaks on From the Westside With Love II, Dom’s Prayer, linkin with Big K.R.I.T., and more

Screen shot 2011-07-06 at 2.31.20 PMLeimert Park’s Dom Kennedy has been growing a loyal fan base since 2008 with a number of impressive mixtapes including: 25th Hour, Future Street/Drug Sounds, Best After Bobby, From The Westside With Love, and his most recent free project, The Original Dom Kennedy.

Just last week, the emerging West Coast emcee released his first album via iTunes, From The Westside With Love II.  The new project has already been met with a great response from critics and fans alike.

HipHopAtLunch met up with Dom Kennedy at his sold out NYC show to speak on his debut album, the motivation behind “Dom’s Prayer,” how he originally linked up with Big K.R.I.T., his upcoming DVD, and more.

Shout out to Archer One for coming through with a classic L.A. feel on the From The Westside With Love album cover.  You can read the pre-album statement that Dom posted on his blog here, and I’ve also posted it at the end of this article.  Below is the quote that Dom used to open his debut album.

With love on my mind and fire in my heart,
They can never take us apart,
Never.

In our interview, Dom explained that the “fire” represents his passion to want to get up and create and want to be the best.  The “love” comes from his memories of friends, fans, and family across the country showing their support for his movement.  This opening quote leads into one of Dom Kennedy’s most personal songs yet, “Dom’s Prayer.”

Here’s the scene from Lean On Me that helped to inspire BJ The Chicago Kid’s ending harmony.  Like Dom mentioned above, this song gives the fans a great update on his life while also showing what he’s thankful for.  Footage of Dom Kennedy performing this track can be found here.

Dom throws a few stutters into his verses on this smooth album cut.  K.R.I.T. was definitely a great feature, but a remix with Chip Tha Ripper would be nice too!

Dom Kennedy is part of a handful of emerging West Coast emcees whose talent far outweighs their buzz. After bursting onto the scene in ’08 with his well-received 25th Hour mixtape, Dom was able to solidify his presence on ‘09’s follow up release, Future Street/Drug Sounds. Now, having completed four projects, the unsigned emcee is in a pivotal career position.

Also, in addition to rapping, fashion has always been a strong point for Dom. He’s co-signed by the California-based clothing line, The Hundreds, and even made his first big performance on The Sneaker Pimps Tour back in ’07.
