A year later, Dorrough’s gearing up to drop his sophomore release and has hit the airwaves with another major single, “Get Big.”  The song is taking off fast, as it was already MTV Jams‘ Jam of The Week and created a world wide trending topic on Twitter, upon its premiere on BET’s 106 & Park.

HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Dorrough earlier this week while he was finishing up the album, also titled Get Big. Dorrough spoke about working with Nitti on the producer’s biggest hit since Yung Joc’s “It’s Goin’ Down,” the upcoming video for “Hood Bitch Fetish” featuring Yo Gotti, and what it’s like recording with Jim Jones, as well as homestate-heroes Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, and Slim Thug.

Being in the studio for six hours with Jim Jones sounds like a hilarious time!  I can’t wait to hear the song they eventually created.

Like we mentioned in the interview, Dorrough’s “Get Big” has been killing it on MTV Jams and, along with 8 ball & MJG’s “Bring It Back,” is helping to get Nitti back on top of his production game.

“Hood Bitch Fetish” is currently one of the hottest songs in Dallas, and should only get more spins after the official video drops in early August.  The track’s remix, featuring Gorilla Zoe, has one of my favorite Dorrough verses:

Those lines about Walmart and Walgreens are hilarious!

Like Dorrough said in our interview, it’s an honor to have some of Texas’ biggest artists reach out to him for a guest verse.  What made it even more special, was the fact that those third coast emcees were on top of the rap game back when Dorrough first started taking his craft seriously and pursuing a rap career.  If Mike Jones were on the track instead of Dorrough, I would have sworn this was 2005 all over again!

“Main Event” will be on Chamillionaire’s upcoming Venom album, but before that drops, be sure to pick up Get Big on August 3rd!

Six years later, the 22-year-old emcee is looking to continue her successful music career, but this time as a solo artist.  Her latest mixtape, Bitch Muzik: Part 3, and impressive guest verse on Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” Remix, helped the Atlanta artist secure her current record deal with Jive.

Last week, HipHopAtLunch.com caught up with Diamond to discuss her new label deal, the interesting concept behind her music video for “Lotta Money,” and what we can expect to hear on the Cocaine Waitress mixtape, hosted by DJ Holiday.

I’m definitely looking forward to new that track with Dorrough, especially after hearing that it may end up being the second single off of his sophomore album.

If you follow Diamond on Twitter, you already know that she enjoys watching Sci-Fi movies and TV shows such as Avatar and True Blood.  In fact, she enjoys them so much, that she decided to have a photo shoot where they made her into the lead female from the Avatar movie.  Here are some pics from the Avatar-themed event that was used to build up Diamond’s portfolio.

As mentioned in our interview, Diamond’s freestyles have recently taken on major records such as Soulja Boy’s latest hit “Pretty Boy Swag” and Rick Ross’ “BMF.”  What’s interesting about these choices, is the lack of other female emcees who attempt to go in over such popular beats.

Diamond’s ad libs over this female anthem are pretty hilarious, “Diamond, Dat Rite, etc.”  Now “Pretty Boy Swag” was an easy candidate for a female remix, but no one foresaw the female version of “Blowing Money Fast.”

Diamond went in over Lex Luger and Rick Ross‘ street anthem, where instead of Big Meech and Larry Hoover, the female emcee related herself to powerful women such as: Jada Pinkett, Oprah Winfrey, Kim Porter, and Robin Givens.

The Crunk chimes used by Recka on the production of ”Lotta Money” are giving me flashbacks to the Crime Mob days. While the song’s theme is pretty self-explanatory, it’ll be interesting to see how the visuals, directed by Dr. Teeth, turn out!  As she explained in our interview, Diamond plans on using this video to introduce people to Ms 32 Flavaz!

Now that I’ve heard the EP first hand, I can confidently say that the “Oil Money” track featuring Bun B, Chip Tha Ripper, and Chuck Inglish, which Freddie spoke about in our previous interview, is crack.  Be sure to keep an eye out for the song’s video, which was shot while the emcees were all in Austin for this year’s SXSW event.

After playing select songs from the upcoming mixtape and EP, Freddie Gibbs sat down with HipHopAtLunch.com to speak about “The Ghetto” getting love from MTV, filming a video for the new single, “National Anthem (Fuck The World),” and how his recent collaboration with Outasight came about.

I like the idea of Freddie Gibbs putting out an EP with Decon as a way for his real fans to show their support.  After all, the Str8 Killa EP will feature two previously unheard tracks for all the people who can’t get enough of Fredro’s music.

Shout out to Josh The Goon for producing Gibbs’ next single, National Anthem (Fuck The World).”  This beat was made for Gangsta Gibbs’ versatile flow, as he works in and out of spitting quick raps.

Freddie uses the second verse to address how he’s strayed clear of selling lies and being molded by the industry:

“Playa haters fuck ‘em,

Radio, fuck ‘em,
Hoe my shit still be bumpin’,
Never changed my style up for any of ‘em, I’m strictly thuggin,

If you want to make it in the music industry, you often have to have Gibbs’ “fuck the world” mentality.  I can’t wait to see how the video turned out, especially after hearing that they filmed part of it out in New York farmland, ha!

HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Rhymefest at Fat Beats in NYC to speak about the El Che album, his viral music videos, and the new Chicago super-group, Blacksploitation.

Blacksploitation’s upcoming project, The DuSable Museum, sounds really interesting – great concept!  I can’t wait to see what the Chicago super group, consisting of Rhymefest, Mikkey Halsted, J.U.I.C.E., and Twone Gabz, cooks up.

Let’s take a look at the cartoon music videos discussed in the interview:

Rhymefest – “Say Wassup” (Featuring Phonte)

The 3-D video for “Saw Wassup” is entertaining enough to warrant three minutes of your time, especially given Phonte’s smooth hook and Rhymefest’s always thought-provoking lyrics.

It’s hard to believe that respectable companies such as Warner Brothers and Disney used to create these culturally insensitive cartoons.  I agree with Rhymefest that we should allow hip hop artists the opportunity to mature with their music before writing them off, in a similar fashion to how Warner Bros. and Disney were allowed to come up with more appropriate cartoons before loosing our attention.  Also, if you enjoyed the video, be sure to check out the album version of “Give It To Me,” as it has guest verses from Saigon and Adad.

By the way, if you want to hear Rhymefest’s personal favorite, “Truth On You,” you’ll have to buy the album.  Youtube.com has already blocked the content.

He’s already off to a great start having a smash single on his hands alongside the hottest independent group in the country, Travis Porter.

Bryan J stopped by HipHopAtLunch.com’s offices to discuss his hit single, “Let Me Take You Out,” the song’s viral video, working with Travis Porter, and his upcoming projects.

Deciding to drop his official debut single on Travis Porter’s Proud To Be A Problem mixtape was a great move, as the project set two worldwide Twitter trending topics and became the number eleventh most searched Google term on the day of its release.

In addition to having his single, “Let Me Take You Out,” on the project, Bryan J provided the hook on Travis Porter’s serious track, “Keep Ya Head Up.”

This extremely playful song should kill at radio, especially when the official video drops!

Here’s the ridiculously catchy hook:

Like Bryan J stated in our interview, Travis Porter and himself brought the same high level energy to “Let Me Take You Out” as they had in the video for “Uh Huh Part 2″ off of Travis Porter and Waka Flocka’s Streets R Us mixtape.

The first time I heard this track, Quez and Strap’s intro had me hooked:

“If you know you do it big, and you a bad bitch,

If your girlfriend thick, but you know you the shit,

Everybody stop and stare when she walks in the room,
I said girl you the bomb, she tick ticked and went boom.”

Those are some funny lines.  Also, just like in “Let Me Take You Out,” “Uh Huh Part 2″ has another infectious hook from Bryan:

“If your girlfriend cute, but you know that you the bomb,
Say uh huh, uh huh,
If you’re chillin in the club with your hair and nails done,
Say uh huh, uh huh,
The stage light up, yea we came to party,
Walk up to the bar, she asking for Bacardi,

Before he left our offices, Bryan J gave me a sneak peak at his upcoming mixtape.  Trust me when I say it’s gonna be crazy!

Despite only being a little over a month since the project’s release date, K.R.I.T. is already looked at as one of the more exciting emerging artists from the South.

HipHopAtLunch.com spoke to Big K.R.I.T. about his recent meeting with Bun B and a possible collaboration with the southern legend.  Also, K.R.I.T. walked us through his thought process behind select tracks off of the K.R.I.T. Wuz Here album.

Getting Bun B on a remix to Big K.R.I.T.’s “Country Shit” track would be crazy!  Hopefully the track will come out sounding like the vintage UGK records, seeing as K.R.I.T.’s already being compared to Pimp C.

Here’s a breakdown of the six tracks that K.R.I.T. spoke about in our interview:

Big K.R.I.T. – “Return Of 4eva”

Since I wrote out the lyrics to Big K.R.I.T.’s first verse in our previous interview, I’ve broken down Big Sant’s verse below:

“Well it’s Big Sant bitch, and I’m a mob type figure,
Coming down on you hoes and you pussy ass niggas,
Forever international, sippin sake with my Asain girl,
My address is the winner’s circle, you can hate me now,
Hotter than my leather in the summer with the windows up,
The word legend never gets said unless you mention us,
My speech is mink, I want it all plus the kitchen sink,
The whip white, time right, money green, pussy pink, (yeahh),
You can Google that, think I’m lying,
Baby choose, I’m  apposed,
Hoe I’m polished just to shine,
Add the blue blockas and gatas, and even Steven can see,
So look at me motherfucker, look at me.”

Big Sant killed his sole feature on the album.

Speaking on The Alumni, K.R.I.T.’s group which consists of Big Sant and himself, K.R.I.T. mentioned that “Return of 4eva” basically “sums up the sound that they’re aiming to bring back.”  If that’s the case, then I can’t wait to get my hands on The Alumni’s debut album!

Big K.R.I.T. – “Viktorious”

The powerful interludes built into “Viktorious,” where Big K.R.I.T. speaks on coming from Mississippi, gave me chills at first listen.  This creative commentary on the song’s purpose coupled with the fast paced rapping helps to vividly portray K.R.I.T.’s frustration to the listener.

Big K.R.I.T. – “Children of The World”

“They want my soul, like my ancestors ain’t enough.
If I can’t trust my own government who can I trust?”

Big K.R.I.T. touches on some less than ideal situations over this impressive sample. “Children of the World” is definitely a fan favorite off of the album.

Big K.R.I.T. – “Something”

Be on the lookout for the official video to “Something” coming soon!

The way Big K.R.I.T. inter-weaved this song’s Al Green sample with his lyrics was not only creative but made the track take on extra meaning.  In his own words, K.R.I.T. was able to “build a story with the sample, making it more personal than just a beat.”

It was interesting to hear K.R.I.T. say that he recorded “Something” in his late-grandmother’s bathroom.  Especially since the next song we spoke about, “I Gotta Stay,” was written in her memory.

Big K.R.I.T. – “I Gotta Stay”

It was sad to hear about Big K.R.I.T.’s grandmother passing away in January, but I’m sure she’s proud of what he’s since accomplished with his music.

K.R.I.T. said that he made “I Gotta Stay” for himself, and that it has special meaning to him whether or not anyone else understands it.  Having said that, emotional tracks like this seem to always appeal to a wide range of people.

Big K.R.I.T. – “Voices”

We’re going to end this article with the final track off of K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, “Voices.”  As K.R.I.T. mentioned in the interview, this song touches on the people who’ve been influencing him over the years and filling his head with suggestions, both good or bad.

This song’s heavy bass and motivational theme have me keeping it in heavy rotation.
 

What’s Your Favorite Song Off The Album?

Last time we met up with XV, he was celebrating the release of his well received Everybody’s Nobody project.  He’s since kept fans happy with 30 Minute Layover, a half an hour mixtape meant to prepare listeners for the takeoff to Vizzy Zone.

After his Highline Ballroom performance, XV met up with HipHopAtLunch.com to explain the recently leaked “Remember The Rain” track, touch on the inspiration behind remaking Eminem and Lil Wayne’s “Drop The World,” and let us know what to expect on Vizzy Zone.

It’s pretty ambitious for XV to be taking on industry standards by refusing to move into a better market than Kansas.  Here’s the track off of his latest project that covers trying to bring more hip hop attention to the Midwest.

XV – “Lift The Game”

The emotionally charged instrumental presented in “Drop The World,” is a perfect backdrop to XV’s venting.

“The city say, remember when radio ain’t give Vizzy play?
Now they read the shit I say like I was Ernest Hemingway,
Funny how the square that could never really fit in,
got so many people riding, I don’t know what they’ll all fit in,
They tell me move to New York like it’s so fatal,

As mentioned in the interview, “Remember the Rain” was released early last week but recorded in 2003.  Having said that, I’ve included the track in this post for those interested in hearing a “more hood” XV than we’re used to.

XV – “Remember the Rain”

XV plans on exploring the interesting concept of bringing listeners through every part of his song-writing process with the upcoming Vizzy Zone project.  With DJ Ill Will, DJ Rock Star, LRG, and Karma Loop on board, Vizzy Zone should be the Kansas emcee’s break out release of 2010.

Chiddy serves as the group’s emcee while Xaphoon Jones produces the beats, which mostly consist of chopped up samples.  Outside of putting in their fair share of studio time, the Drexel University dropouts have also been getting major experience with working a crowd.

HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Chiddy Bang before they took the stage at NYC’s Highline ballroom to speak about being co-signed by Black Thought of The Roots, the creative concepts explored in the duo’s music videos, the upcoming UK tour, and possible collaborations with Big Sean, XV, and Mike Posner.

Hopefully we’re treated to some new Chiddy Bang collaborations sooner than later!

So far, the Philadelphia-based duo only has two releases; The Swelly Express mixtape and most recently, the mini-mixtape, Air Swell.  But we can expect an album to be dropping through EMI/Parlophone this fall.

As mentioned in the interview, the duo kept their heads at a normal size but shrunk their bodies down for the visuals to “Opposite of Adults,” iTunes’ current video of the week!  Big shout out to Waverly Films, Minka, and everyone involved in creating the group’s creative videos.

Chiddy Bang – “All Things Go”

I would’ve never thought that the ridiculously catchy Sufjan Stevens sample on “All Things Go” was both written and recorded in less than an hour, wow.  For a closer look at the song’s lyrics, check out our previous article.

Chiddy Bang – “Pass Out”

The projection used in this Tinie Tempah remake was quite entertaining, especially the part where Chiddy flies by on an exercise bike, ha!  When performing “Pass Out” last week in NYC, Chiddy decided to grab topics (Brooklyn, mustard, and PornHub.com) out of the crowd for his on-the-spot freestyle.  This idea worked well and more hip hop artists should freestyle with the crowd.

If you’re in the UK, keep an eye out for a Chiddy Bang concert near you, as the group is currently overseas on their first headlining tour.  Also be sure to grab the next issue of XXL Magazine which will feature Chiddy Bang in their Show and Prove section.

The well-received 4:57 project, named after the time Laws used to pack up and get ready to leave work, has been expanding the emerging artist’s fan base since its release earlier this year.  The Don Cannon-hosted mixtape has also helped to land Laws in XXL Magazine, put his single, “Hold You Down,” in rotation on Shade 45, and add his name to the concert bill on Reflection Eternal’s current tour.

HipHopAtLunch.com stopped by the Warner Bros. offices yesterday to speak with Laws about working with such a wide range of artists including electro-pop star Calvin Harris, his feelings on Eminem’s new music, what we can expect to hear on the upcoming Yesterday’s Future project dedicated to Paul McCartney, and a possible collaboration with Jay Electronica.

Hearing Laws and Jay Electronica on the same track would be dope – hopefully that happens soon!  Also, although I was looking forward to the release of 4:57 Overtime, I understand why the No-DJ project was put on the back burner in the midst of his quickly budding career.

As mentioned in the interview, Laws likes to cross different genres with hip hop.  This method works well for the emerging artist as his impressive lyrics keep the hardcore hip hop fans listening while the actual sound and hook of these tracks appeal to a more mainstream audience.  A perfect example of this genre-blending style can be found in “Colors” featuring Calvin Harris.

It’s a good thing that Rook from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League put Laws in contact with Calvin.  This funky track has a crazy amount of cross-over appeal and will undoubtedly be a favorite of Laws’ female fans.  It was interesting to hear Laws explain his thought process behind aggressively rhyming on fast electronic tracks where other artists simply ride out the beat.  I agree that dance records would be more exciting with insightful lyrical content.

Here’s an excerpt from Laws’ second verse aimed at members of the opposite sex:

“Let me take her to my home, to my zone, to my bed,
To the end and beginning of a friendship,
You got me like, what’s your name. what’s your size,
Are you mine, Are you some kind of black magic temptress?
I hope so cause my life’s kinda ordinary,
I need a woman, I’ve broken all sort of cherries,
I need a tigress, I need a night prowler, I need a wanna try this? Alright holler,
I need a chick when I call, that she might follow,
I got dope, if they raid she might swallow,
Don’t be frightened momma, go and bring some colors here,
If your love is real I might even scoop your mother.”

The rapid-fire questions put into his lyrics work really well with the quick beat.

If “Colors” isn’t your type of music, check out our review of 4:57 where we touch on more of Laws’ “traditional-sounding” hip hop songs.  Also, be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming Yesterday’s Future project dedicated to Paul McCartney.  Conceptual mixtapes and albums need to start playing a bigger role in hip hop.  For example, people who don’t even like Paul McCartney’s music will listen to Yesterday’s Future just to see how well the concept was executed!

Thoughts on this Florida emcee?

K.R.I.T. stands for “King Remembered in Time,” and if the Southern emcee’s creative production and exceptional lyricism are any indicators of his career’s longevity, he will surely be remembered.  Outside of possessing the type of talent that’ll have industry insiders watching him over the next year, Big K.R.I.T. also has a sound that can be easily marketed to radio.

Yesterday, HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Big K.R.I.T. as he he put the final touches on his K.R.I.T. Wuz Here album.  We asked K.R.I.T. to describes his unique sound, share what it was like working with Wiz Khalifa on the Kush and Orange Juice project, and touch on the Pimp C comparisons he’s been receiving.

Hearing Big K.R.I.T. describe his sound and how the different aspects of the beat work together was inspiring.  K.R.I.T.’s passion for music became quite vivid while describing his average beat as “punching you in the chest, then cooling down, and coming back with a driving force.”

As Big K.R.I.T. explained in the interview, Mississippi doesn’t have a set sound in the hip hop world.  Having said that, the state does have a great deal of respect for Southern hip hop’s golden era.  This respect for Southern hip hop legends is very apparent in Big K.R.I.T.’s “Country Shit” (seen below).

There’s no doubt in my mind that Bun B won’t reach out to Big K.R.I.T. after hearing this country rap song.  Now obviously there will never be another Chad Butler, but you can’t tell me that you don’t hear the essence of Pimp C in K.R.I.T.’s opening verse:

Candi cars, superstars,
rubber bands in my pockets,
A couple broads for the poppin,

Big K.R.I.T. – “Return of 4eva” (Featuring Big Sant)

Big K.R.I.T. and Big Sant come hard on “Return of 4eva” with what I hope is a direct reflection of the sound we can expect to hear on their upcoming group project.  Here’s Big K.R.I.T.’s opening verse:

“Now it’s the young K. R. I. T.,
Mackin’ hos like niggas with perms and gold teeth,
Candy paint, Caddy doors, how I feel,
Gator toe fetesh, with diamonds against the wheel,
Like a pimp, never slack, never fold,

Although carrying very different flows, these two southern emcees work well together.  Be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming release from Big K.R.I.T. and Big Sant’s group, The Alumni, distributed through K.R.I.T.’s label, Multi-Records.

Big K.R.I.T. – “Glass House” (Featuring Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y)

Not only did Big K.R.I.T. produce one of the standout tracks on Wiz Khalifa’s Kush x Orange Juice in “Glass House,” but he also stole the show from Wiz and Curren$y with this impressive final verse:

I’ve been seeing a lot of tweets quoting this verse as of late, my favorite of which being “Mississippi Pimppp (c) Big K.R.I.T.”
