Bone – Home Gurl Remix (Featuring Rick Ross & Bun B)

Bone’s “Home Gurl” has already enjoyed a great deal of success due to its official video and radio play, and now Rick Ross and Bun B have jumped onto the remix in hopes of taking the song even further!

All three of these artists keep the track’s club feel, but not to no one’s surprise, Bun B steals the show. Here’s an excerpt from his verse:

“Now it was once said by a girl who couldn’t quit,
Bun B please can I have another hit,
The OG told her, girl I don’t give a shit,
Better get down on you’re knees and swallow don’t spit,
She let my dick Brees like a Saint player, who dat?
I’ll take your chick from ya, think I can’t come and do that?
Ask your bopper, I’m a trending topic on Twitter,
If I see ya and I want ya I’mma damn sure get ya,
Big Bun B I got a dick like a cobra,
Big black mamba it’ll bite ya all over,
I guarantee your girl won’t refuse it.”

I like Bun B’s references to N.W.A.’s “Dope Man,” as well as the New Orleans Saints at the beginning of his verse. The hip hop legend has been killing everything in his path as of late, and if you missed his No Mixtape project, I suggest you download it now!

Laws – “Look Easy” (Featuring Diz Gibran)

“Looks Easy” featuring, Diz Gibran, is the first track to leak off of Laws’ upcoming Overtime, the No-DJ version of 4:57. The new project will contain bonus songs not included on the DJ Don Cannon mixtape, as well as a handful of new features.

Here’s a quick excerpt from Laws’ first verse:

“It was something like a zillion to one when I crept up, dog,
You ain’t never seen me sweat those odds,
I’m still frosted.
Too bad I’m never off beat,
You’ll never see it, like a du-rag at the Lacrosse meet,
They cross me, but see they forgot to cross they i’s,
They chicks brain me out, now they look lobotomized.”

That line about getting brain until the girl looks lobotomized is pretty hilarious!

These two emcees are definitely artists to watch in 2010.

Mixtape Review: Laws – 4:57

The Brazilian-born, Florida-raised emcee, Laws has been creating a great deal of buzz around his impressive 4:57 mixtape, hosted by DJ Don Cannon.

The Grammy award-winning group of producers, The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, first discovered the cocky artist after he built up a reputation as a standout battle rapper in Tampa, FL.

Fans of the confident Laws are well aware of his brash persona, with the majority of them having already enjoyed his Your Future Favorite Rapper mixtape, hosted by DJ Smallz.

Often a new emcee with a cocky attitude can be quiet annoying, but in Laws’ case, the attitude doesn’t come out of nowhere. After all, the 4:57 project, sponsored by J.U.S.T.I.C.E League and Asylum/Warner Bros, is one of the new year’s best mixtape releases!

Speaking on his music in the tape’s “We Like It” track, Laws spits, “I’m tryin to make that kind of record where you save the package/ go on fuck around and make a classic.“ That should be the goal of every aspiring artist.

Below, I’m going to showcase a few of the standout tracks from the project:

Laws – “Murder”

“Murder” is one of the early tracks off the tape and features some of my favorite lines with “I’m not offensive, but they like, ‘did you hear the shit he said?’” and “see my skin tone and wonder what’s my story/ soon as the beat drop, then they stop talkin.”

Laws references a strange mix of hip hop artists with the lines:

“Being patient saves embarrassment,
I’d rather be a Kweli than a Hamilton,
In person, situations get handled different,
But if she swings, best believe I’ll Gucci Man the chicken,
I’m not violent, but my pride is sick.”

I like the way he worked in a reference to Charles Hamilton getting punched by a girl. That video will forever haunt Hamilton’s career.

Laws – “Flashback”

“Flashback” has the upbeat feel present throughout most of the tape, which works extremely well against Laws’ flow. This unique sound should help lead to a great deal of crossover appeal for the emerging artist.

Here’s a quick excerpt from the track:

“I’m writing my memoirs in Cairo,
By the pyramids, life like a slide-show,
Back home more clowns than a sideshow,
I’m tryin to do this for my mother like Psycho,
They ask me if I’m ever quittin on the mic though,
I tell ‘em yes…. then I tell ‘em Pysch! no,
Too many people still confusing me with my clones,
So until my record spinnin like a cyclone,
I’mma Cobra Kai flows, no mercy,
Walkin a green mile, no Percy,
I’m at my late spot, they trynna irk me,
I’m sayin’ this is a celebration Charlie Murphy!
And if you look like you’re lame,
I got a bodyguard that look like Blade.”

That line about doing this for his mother like in the movie Psycho, had me cracking up! Also, in the final verse, the image Laws paints of himself performing full-energy for an empty gymnasium, except for one janitor whose feeling the show, is pretty impressive as well.

Laws – “Colors”

Calvin Harris provides the funky electro-pop hook which makes “Colors” the most catchy song on 4:57. I can really see female fans loving this dance track.

There’s a lot of similarities between Laws and, fellow Hispanic emcee, Emilio Rojas throughout the duration of the tape, but on “Colors” the comparison is most easily noticed.

Laws – “Shining”

“Shining” is the most hyped track off the mixtape as 9th Wonder laced it with an addictively smooth beat. The other impressively produced track that’s grabbing hip hop fans’ attention is the DJ Khalil-produced, “Hold You Down.”

Keep an eye out for Overtime to be dropping soon. The project is a No DJ version of 4:57 and contains a few bonus songs, the first of which came yesterday with “Look Easy” featuring Diz Gibran.

Mixtape Review: XXL’s 10 Freshmen For ‘10

Yesterday, XXL Magazine and DJ Whoo Kid gave us a handful of new tracks from some of the best new artists in the game with their 10 Freshmen for ‘10 mixtape.

The tape helps to defend the new class of emcees against bitter fans and critics who argue that a different group of ten are more deserving. It also serves as a quick glimpse into each artists’ style.

Regardless of whether or not these are the best freshmen emcees in the game, I applaud XXL Magazine for continuing to create a great deal of buzz around ten hard working artists each year.

As far as the actual music goes, I was hoping to hear all new material. Unfortunately, none of Nipsey Hussle or OJ Da Juiceman’s tracks were new.

Below, I’ll take a closer look at a few of the stand out tracks:

Freddie Gibbs – “Born to Roll”

Freddie Gibbs stole the tape’s spotlight with his impressive flow and gangsta lyrics, destroying the classic Masta Ace track, “Born To Roll.”

Here’s an excerpt:

“Tales of a nigga livin in his momma basement,
Listen to her bitchin every morning, it’s the same shit,
Time for me to get out on this corner, make a cane flip,
Post up at a nigga residence and be invasive,
I’m knockin at your door bitch like I was maintenance and you sprung a leak
Heard that you get pounds of that grape shit every other week,
So my inclination to take shit at its fuckin peak…
Some might say that I think illogical,
Cause I still believe in God, but down to dance with the devil to make a dollar though…
Keep my name hot in the hood,
And my dick in a hood bitch,
Niggas violate, we slice ‘em and dice ‘em like wood chips,
Or we straight Vanilla Ice ‘em, and get on some Suge shit
Hang a nigga from 40 stories watch him drop like Wiley Coyote,
New in your hood, but G.I. to the Chi, them niggas know me,
Gangsta Gibbs from the guts never gave a fuck,
Excuse me while I get my paper and my haters up.”

I like how Gibbs referenced Suge Knight dangling Vanilla Ice over a balcony. That’s still a hilarious image!

J.Cole – “Who’s World Is This”

J.Cole didn’t murder the instrumental of Alicia Keys’ “Diary,” to the degree that I expected. Having said that, the track is still noteworthy as the Roc Nation emcee spits some clever lines with:

“Straight out the ville and I made it,
Hope you feeling my latest,
Ay, what I spit on this page is highly anticipated,
Contagious, so when I spit it you gone get it,
Slightly different from these rappers who just spit it but don’t live it,
See I ain’t no flashy nigga, so don’t expect me to floss,
These niggas out here rappin with they fucking fingers crossed,
I was a dreamer then I came up with a plan,
Where I land, I put it all in God’s hands.”

The image of lesser rappers spitting lines with their fingers crossed has me cracking up!

Fashawn – “So Hard Freestyle”

The Fresno representative of this year’s class goes in over Rihanna and Jeezy’s “Hard,” with:

“I did it without a track from Kanye,
Beat from Dr. Dre,
Hook from T-Pain,
Co-sign from Jay,
A sixteen from Drake,
A Cameo from Snoop,
Dance like Soulja Boy, you gotta salute,
How I came in the game,
Took it back to the essence,
Put it back in perspective,
What an immaculate conception,
I’m complex,
Still ain’t made the cover of Complex,
Bomb sets for trying to intercept my conquest.”

It’s good to hear Fashawn making use of the impressive freestyle that dropped a few weeks ago. If you still haven’t heard the Boy Meets World album, you can hear Fashawn discuss it in our recent interview.

Pill – “Angels Freestyle”

After hearing Pill’s opening lines, I knew this freestyle was going to be a good: “Dressed to kill, my outfit is a murderer/ Break in your bitch pussy, they consider me a burglarer.” The Pink City native rarely disappoints.
