Two years ago, Mick Boogie and Terry Urban set the music world on fire with an unprecedented mash-up (although they hate that word) of musical icons Jay-Z and Chris Martin/Coldplay… Viva Ha Hova. The project featured production from Mick, Terry, 9th Wonder, Cookin’ Soul, The Kickdrums, nVMe, 6th Sense and others.

Viva La Hova went on to garner hundreds of thousands of downloads, and receive acclaim around the world. Jay-Z himself told Mick he liked the project… and Coldplay even linked to it on their official website.

As the weather gets colder and summertime fades away, it seemed like a perfect time to re-release a project that can only be described as “ambient cold weather music.”

“Terry and I were planning on re-releasing it in December anyways, just because everywhere we go, people ask us about it,” said Mick Boogie. “After Jay-Z and Coldplay announced their big New Years Eve plans, including performing together integrating their songs… and about a million people emailed us… we decided to just drop the re-release now. Why wait?”

Featuring two new bonus songs not contained on the original Viva La Hova release, this project also finds the original mixes re-mastered, non-sequenced, and without the signature “dj drops” over the songs.

“Everyone always told us they treated this project as an album, and not a mixtape,” said Terry Urban. “This being the playlist generation, we wanted to offer the songs in an album, non-mixed format so people can use the songs however they see fit.”

Last week, Mick Boogie, NVME, and Duck Down Records teamed up to release their Survival Kit mixtape. The project pays tribute to hip hop greats, KRS-One and Buckshot.

Named after the recent Survival Skills album, the mixtape features nineteen of the game’s most talented emerging artists remaking classic records by the two hip hop legends.

Since the project is a modest ten tracks long, I suggest you find the time to give it a quick listen. I applaud the creative concept and quality of the music put forth.

I’m going to highlight a few of the standout tracks below:

Sha Stimuli, Promise, J.A.M.E.S. Watts, Fashawn – “MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know Remix”

Sha Stimuli kills the first verse of “MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know.”

“If you don’t know me by now I doubt you’ll ever know me,
I’m not on Atlantic, I ain’t signed to Sony,
I’m not even sure how many labels are left,
But I’m labeled the booth assassin while the masses have slept…
Your flow ain’t as half as tight as like the way ya’ll dress.
And my knowledge reigns supreme, no I ain’t KRS.”

I know a lot of people are going to love that line about these new rappers having better style than rapping ability, ha! Also, the comment about not knowing how many labels are left is pretty great, as it seems they’ve been having layoffs every couple of weeks!

Here’s KRS-One’s original track, which sampled Clifford Brown’s “Yesterdays.”

Torae & Skyzoo – “Talk Shit Remix”

Torae and Skyzoo put forth two of the best verses off the entire project with this track. If you’re still sleepin on these impressive Duck Down emcees, hopefully “Talk Shit Remix” will wake you up!

Here’s an excerpt from Torae’s verse:

“Killin every nigga in ciphers,
Couple dudes got more buzz, but none of ‘em nicer.
If you feel you can fuck with it, fuck it then bet your budget,
Nigga’s pen is pathetic, promise I prove it in public, youngin,
My family is OG status,
Shittin on who mattered when you was shittin in pampers.
And that’s an understatement,
What better label for the most underrated, than one that started under the pavement?
For this engagement, get your skullies on,
Timberlands, Champion hoodies, let’s get the gully on.
I’m label mates with apes, legends, and greats,
Duck Down’s what it is and ya’ll shit what it ain’t.”

Those first lines about being better than the dudes with buzz had me hooked. The following excerpt is from Skyzoo’s verse that sums up his hip hop success:

“I became the talk of the city,
Whether blogs or the building,
From the server to the staircase, and all of that within it,
I’ve been saying this forever, so all of it’s a given,
The mixtapes was free throws, chalk it up to scrimmage.”

Here’s Buckshot’s original track which samples Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew.”

Cause, The Kid Daytona, & Chaundon – “South Bronx Remix”

I know The Kid Daytona had a great time goin in over this South Bronx anthem! Here’s an excerpt from his verse:

“I was raised up the block from the house that Ruth built,
Raised off hip hop, shouts to Kool Herc, still,
Wonder how it used to feel,
To walk through the streets, with a boom box bumpin’ BDP.”

With lines like those, Cause, The Kid Daytona, and Chaundon capture the feelings of current Bronx natives who reminiscence over the borough’s hip hop dominance.

Other tracks to check out are: Christian Rich’s “Buck Em Down Remix,” Tanya Morgan’s “Gotcha Open Remix,” and Diz Gibran and Shawn Chrystopher’s “Sound of Da Police Remix.”

Download the whole project now, and experience the tribute!

Mick Boogie is the Youngstown, Ohio native, responsible for the critically acclaimed mixtapes, Viva La Hova by Jay-z and 1988 by Adele.

Mick got his start in college radio and eventually became one of the most recognized names in the DJ world.

Part of this recognition comes from consistently co-signing quality emerging artists such as B.o.B., U-N-I, Donnis, Big Sean, and The Kid Daytona.

He oversees most projects with these artists, often creating the overall vision and building the team of emcees and producers.

HipHopAtLunch.com met up with Mick Boogie in his Brooklyn neighborhood, to hear about the process behind his projects, touch on the continued success of his Motivation clothing store, and his views on Twitter.

I agree with Mick Boogie that most of his projects would be more appropriately called conceptual albums instead of mixtapes.

His clothing store, Motivation, has a nice collection of clothes at reasonable prices, and I can see why there’s interest in a franchise movement.

The Peter, Bijorn, and John project spoken about in the interview, Re-Living Thing, is a full-album remix of the group’s latest album, Living Thing. A lot of Mick’s time and effort went into this project, as he had to organize over 30 emcees and producers for his final vision of the “conceptual album.”

When approaching the project, he listened to the original album multiple times before asking a specific producer to remix each track. After hearing what these producers created, he selected emcees that would fit each particular beat well.

“Stay This Way Remix” is a sample of what the project has to offer, and features verses from Big Pooh, Chaundon & Phil Nash.

That track, remixed by Jazzy Jeff, is really catchy and has been stuck in my head since I started writing this article. Also, that video does an incredible job of playing off the track’s childhood theme.

The other project mentioned in the interview, is Party Robot, Mick Boogie’s collaboration with Idle Warship. In case you’re unfamiliar, Idle Warship is comprised of Talib Kweli, Res, and Graph Nobel.

Here’s Talib’s favorite track off the project and one of the first songs the group worked on, “Bedroom light.”

Kweli has stated that “Bedroom Light” is for the ladies.

Mick Boogie stays busy and, in this year alone, he’s DJ’d parties for Microsoft, Nike, Kim Kardashian, Giant Magazine, Lebron James, and Jay-z at venues all over the world.

If you want to keep up with this hip hop ambassador, tune into his Sirius Shade 45 radio show every Saturday night from 8pm to 10pm.
